MASS IN HONOUR OF BLESSED KATERI TEKAKWITHA

Home

When entering the church, place your fingers in the blessed water and make the sign of the Cross, because it is to bless yourself. Then kneel at the bench before sitting. This is to take a few moments in the presence of Jesus Christ to reflect in prayer that is, without a specific prayer. Some of the faithful stay behind afterwards to do the same again.

If there is singing, the following “Entrance Antiphon” is not said:
ENTRANCE ANTIPHON (that is, verse of a Psalm)
C.: Here is a wise and faithful virgin, Kateri Tekakwitha, who went with a lighted lamp to meet Christ the Lord.

INTENTIONS OF THIS MASS
C.: This Mass of today is said in honour to (or for her canonization) Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you.

RITE OF BLESSING AND SPRINKLING HOLY WATER
C.: Dear friends, this water will be used to remind us of our Baptism. Ask God to bless it, and to keep us faithful to the Spirit He has given us. God our Father, your gift of water brings life and freshness to the earth; it washes away our sins and brings us eternal life. We ask you now to bless this water and to give us your protection on this day, which you have made your own. Renew the living spring of your life within us and protect us in spirit and body, that we may be free from sin and come into your presence to receive your gift of salvation. We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Or during the period of Easter:
C.: Lord God almighty, hear the prayers of your people: we celebrate our creation and redemption. Hear our prayers and bless this water which gives fruitfulness to the fields, and refreshment and cleansing to man. You chose water to show your goodness when you led your people to freedom through the Red Sea and satisfied their thirst in the desert with water from the rock. Water was the symbol used by the prophets to foretell your new covenant with man. You made the water of Baptism holy by Christ’s Baptism in the Jordan: by it you give us a new birth and renew us in holiness. May this water remind us of our Baptism, and let us share the joy of all who have been baptized at Easter. We ask this through Christ our Lord.
C.: Almighty God, we ask you to bless this salt as once you blessed the salt scattered over the water by the prophet Elisha. Wherever this salt and water are sprinkled, drive away the power of evil, and protect us always by the presence of your Holy Spirit. Grant this through Christ our Lord. May almighty God cleanse us of our sins, and through the Eucharist we celebrate make us worthy to sit at His table in His heavenly Kingdom. Amen.

C.: Almighty and all-embracing God, you called Kateri Tekakwitha to live as a consecrated virgin among her people and to shine among us as an example of devotion to the Faith. Homily or two readers today narrate the holy death of Kateri Tekakwitha:

C.: God had taken Kateri from this world when she began to be known to it. Her afflictions were increased everyday at the end of 1679. Sometimes we had seen her standing, but though she was not able to leave her cabin. When she could go out, it was her pleasure to be in the chapel part of the day kneeling or resting on the benches when she could not support herself.
About a year before her death, a great illness had left her with a slow fever and a severe pain in her stomach. This had been accompanied with frequent vomiting caused without doubt from continual work, without ever ceasing until her death, and as a final proof I could remember the agonizing mat of thorns that this generous girl lessened her remaining health. The fever had made all this all worse, which finally obliging her to have kept on her mat and at the end of two months took her from us.
On Tuesday morning, seeing she was approaching death, we gave her Holy Viaticum. Then who could say the joy that she would have and especially when she was told of having the Body of our Lord brought to her. This was unprecedented in the village to see the Blessed Sacrament carried to a cabin, for the sick were brought on a board of bark to the chapel. When it was necessary to give the Holy Viaticum to Kateri, it was found she was too weak to be moved and we had a great scruple to let her die without receiving this sacrament. This extraordinary ceremony, and to see the death of a saint, had attracted everyone at the village. Kateri had gathered all her strength to make well this last Holy Communion. She had begged her companion not to abandon her in this last moment. Kateri testified of her poverty, because it was so great that she had nothing to cover her modestly. Her companion then having known of it lent her vest to Kateri.
It is a praiseworthy custom, for two members of the Holy Family to take turns in watching during the night whenever the sick are dying. On Tuesday night, I had named two of the most fervent members, Mary of Onondaga and Margaret Gagouithon. Margaret was not more than twenty-two years old and sought me after the evening prayers, for my permission to go in the forest and to do some penance for obtaining a happy death for Kateri. The very instant Kateri learned about it, she asked Mary to have Margaret to come immediately. Kateri took hold of Margaret’s arm and whispered to her.

Kateri Tekakwitha: “Approach here, my sister, that I say a little word. Courage, my dear sister, continue with the same fervour you have already began so good.”

C.: Margaret replied Kateri of not knowing her well, because she was a miserable sinner. Again, Kateri held tightly her arm.

Kateri Tekakwitha: “My sister, I know what I am saying, I also know where you come from and I assure you what you are doing is well done and agreeable to our Lord. Have a good courage, persevere constantly and pray for me at my death, so I could soon leave Purgatory. I shall aid you when I am in Paradise, be assured.”

C.: The morning of Holy Wednesday, her illness began to get worst and Kateri received Extreme Unction with the same devotion, which she had received the Holy Viaticum. Her companion, Mary Teresa Tegaiaguenta, had remained next to Kateri and was not able to leave. Although, Kateri assured her companion to go to work at her field and promised to send for her when it was time.
Kateri’s beloved companion and some other women of the Holy Family had formed the “Sisters of Kateri.” They were obliged to go in search of wood for the following feast days, but without knowing whether to go. They thought the right answer was to ask Kateri and I spoke to her for them.

Kateri Tekakwitha: “Let them go to the forest, they will see me die when they return.”

C.: It had happened like Kateri had promised, which she sent for her companion at about 10 o’clock. Mary Theresa Tegaiaguenta had arrived at her cabin a short time before Extreme Unction was given. After receiving the Sacrament, she talked with her companion. However, she was constantly worsening. Father Cholenec was kneeling near her to say the Recommendations of the Soul to God, which are the last prayers of the dying. Kateri had her face turned to Heaven. Her companion embraced her with one hand and supporting her cheek with the other while listening with attention her last words. Kateri having then difficulty speaking without being able to raise her voice, and seeing her companion with tears, said her last parting salutation to her companion.

Kateri Tekakwitha: “I am about to leave. I am going to die, remember always of what we have done together from when we knew each other. If you change, I will accuse you before the tribunal of God. Take courage, despise the discourses of those who have no Faith when they want to persuade you to marry, listen only to the Fathers. If you cannot serve God here, go to the Mission of Lorette. Never give up mortification. I will pray for you, I will assist you in Heaven.”

C.: After these last words, this blessed girl had lost her word when phlegm began to fall and would later take her away. Her eyes then were closed for a long time. She could hear to her very last breath well. And everyone wanted to take part at the devotion, her dying face inspired. It had appeared more like the face of one in contemplation than one dying. She had remained as so until her last breath. Her respiration diminished always from about 9 to 10 hours before her death.
The bell of the chapel was rung at 3 o’clock to gather the Natives, because they desired to witness her death. After 3 o’clock they returned and Kateri Tekakwitha had waited until everyone entered the cabin. When the last one had arrived, which she went into her agony and while everyone were kneeling around her. A short half-hour after her agony she had pronounced her last words.

Kateri Tekakwitha: “Iesos! Wari!” “Jesus! Mary!”

C.: Then she had a slight spasm at the right side of her mouth. She died as if she was falling into a light sleep and we were for along time not certain of her death. Sometime before 4 o’clock, her face had suddenly changed and became in a moment so beautiful, smiling and white. Her face had an appearance of a rosy colour, which she never had and her features were not the same. I saw this immediately, because I was praying beside her and cried out for my astonishment. Her face was so scarred with smallpox from the age of four years old, and with her infirmities and mortification contributed to ruin her even more. And before her death she had taken a darken complexion. Her face appeared more beautiful than when she had been living. I will admit openly of the first thought, which came to me that Kateri might have entered into Heaven at this moment. After reflecting back in her chaste body a small ray of glory she had gone to possess.
The day Kateri died, we passed it with an extraordinary devotion. Immediately, she had left the entire village with a fragrance of her virtue and esteem for sanctity, especially as a few hours later when I eulogized at the evening prayers, which I had made the Natives known of the treasure they possessed and lost before they came to know her. Kateri Tekakwitha died as she had lived that is to say, as a saint. It was to be expected that such a holy life would be followed with a most holy death, because Kateri Tekakwitha was filled with the Holy Spirit. The simplicity of the Natives had made them do on this occasion more than was required, which was kissing of her hands, keeping relics of whatever belonged to her, passing the evening and the rest of the night near her to admire her face. Her face gave devotion even though her soul was separated from her. It was a new argument of credibility, which God had favoured the Natives to make them taste the Faith.
They had placed her body in the coffin with a cross in her hands. It could not be possible to have covered her face, which we looked at closely until she was buried, because of the pleasure we had taken of looking at her.

C.: Let us profess our Faith (but is omitted on the weekdays of the Easter Octave, except Sundays):
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day He rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST


PREPARATION OF THE GIFTS
The Priest says inaudibly before the Host (Bread), but if no song is sung, it will be said aloud the following: Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have this Bread to offer, earth has given and human hands have made. It will become for us the bread of life. If said aloud, the faithful say: Blessed be God forever.
The Priest says quietly to himself for the consecration of the wine: By the mystery of this water and wine may we come to share in the divinity of Christ, who humbled himself to share in our humanity.
The Priest returns to the middle of the altar, takes the Chalice, raises it a little with both hands that is, with one hand around the Chalice and the other under it, saying: Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have this wine to offer, fruit of the vine and work of human hands. It will become our spiritual drink. If said aloud, the faithful, say: Blessed be God forever.
The Priest says inaudibly the prayer: Lord God we ask you to receive and be pleased with the sacrifice we offer you with humble and contrite hearts.

WASHING OF THE HANDS
The Priest washes his hands and quietly says: Lord, wash away my iniquity; cleanse me from sin.

C.: For my brothers and sisters that this sacrifice may be accepted by God the almighty Father.

The faithful reply: May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of His name, for our good, and the good of all His Church.

PRAYER OVER THE GIFTS
C.: Lord, we see the wonder of your love in the life of the virgin, Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha and her witness to Christ. Accept our gifts of praise and make our offering pleasing to you. Grant this through Christ our Lord.
C.: The Lord be with you. And also with you.
C.: Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord.
C.: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

PREFACE
C.: Father, all-powerful and ever-living God, who has received much glory from Kateri Tekakwitha, we are most thankful to you for the graces given to Kateri Tekakwitha throughout her life. Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha virgin who has given herself in her life as the spouse to Christ, which in His suffering we are freed from sin and His rising from the dead we rise to everlasting life. In His return to you in glory we enter into your heavenly Kingdom with Jesus Christ. We join the angels, who were overwhelmed with joy when they beheld this Native girl placed with them, and the saints as they sing their unending hymn of praise:
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna (or “Praised be the Lord”) in the highest. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna (or “Praised be the Lord”) in the highest.

C.: Father, you all holy indeed, and all creation rightly gives you praise. All life, all holiness comes from you through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, by the working of the Holy Spirit. From age to age you gather a people to yourself, so that from east to west a perfect offering may be made to the glory of your name. And so, Father we bring you these gifts. We ask you to make them holy by the power of your Spirit, that they become the Body and Blood of your Son, our Lord, Jesus Christ, at whose command we celebrate this Eucharist. On the night He was betrayed, He took bread and gave you thanks and praise. He broke the bread, gave it to His disciples, and said: “Take this, all of you, and eat it: this is my Body, which will be given up for you.”

Again, He gave you thanks and praise, gave the cup to His disciples, and said: the Priest bows slightly and the ringing of the sanctuary bells: “Take this, all of you, and drink from it: this is the cup of my blood, the blood of the new and everlasting covenant. It will be shed for you and for all so that sins may be forgiven. Do this in memory of me.”

MEMORIAL ACCLAMATION
C.: Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.
C.: Father, calling to mind the death your Son endured for our salvation, His glorious Resurrection and Ascension into Heaven, and ready to greet Him when He comes again, we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice. Look with favour on your Church’s offering, and see the Victim whose death has reconciled us to yourself.
Invocation of the Holy Spirit: Grant that we, who are nourished by His Body and Blood, may be filled with His Holy Spirit, and become one body, one spirit in Christ.
Intercession that is, In Communion with the Saints: May He make us an everlasting gift to you and enabler us to share in the inheritance of yours saints, with Mary, the virgin Mother of God; with the Apostles, the martyrs, Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha virgin and all your saints, on whose constant intercession we rely for help.
For the Church: Lord, may this sacrifice, which has made our peace with you, advance the peace and salvation of all the world. Strengthen in faith and love your pilgrim Church on earth; your servant, Pope Benedict XVI, our Bishop Jacques Berthelet, and all the bishops, with the clergy and the entire people your Son has gained for you. Father, hear the prayers of the family you have gathered here before you. In mercy and love unite all your children wherever they may be.
For the Dead: Welcome into your Kingdom our departed brothers and sisters, and all who have left this world in your friendship. We hope to enjoy forever the vision of your glory, through Christ our Lord, from whom all good things come.
Also, Father save us from final damnation, and count us among those you have chosen by granting us the keys to the Kingdom of God, which are through the words of forgiveness your Son Jesus Christ, our Saviour, repeatedly taught.

COMMUNION RITE

Let us pray with confidence to the Father in the words of our Saviour gave us (and may be said in their Native tongue):
Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy Kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

C.: Deliver us, Lord, from every evil, and grant us peace in our day. In your mercy keep us free from sin and protect us from all anxiety as we wait in joyful hope for the coming of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. For the Kingdom, the power and the glory are yours, now and forever.

C.: Lord Jesus Christ, you said to your Apostles: “I leave you peace, my peace I give you.” Look not on our sins, but on the Faith of your Church, and grant us peace and unity of your Kingdom where you live forever and ever. Amen.

The Priest breaks off a particle from the divided Host in his hand and drops it in the Chalice, saying: May this commingling and consecration of the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ obtain for all who receive it eternal life.
The Priest then inaudibly says the prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, by the will of the Father and the work of the Holy Spirit your death brought life to the world. By your holy Body and Blood free me from all my sins and from every evil. Keep me faithful to your teaching, and never let me be parted from you. We ask this through Jesus Christ.
The Priest makes the sign of the Cross three times over the Chalice, saying: The peace + of the Lord be + with + you. And with your Spirit.

The Priest then makes the sign of the Cross before himself with the Chalice, saying: May the Body of Christ bring me to everlasting life.

The choice of receiving Communion, whether in the hand or on the tongue while kneeling, rests with each individual communicant. A good Communion is when one is fasting since midnight.

C.: The Body of Christ. (The communicant takes the Host). Amen.
C.: The Blood of Christ. (The communicant dips the Host in the wine of the Chalice, with the other hand under the hand holding the Host to be consumed). Amen.

The Host is eaten, but rather letting the Host melt in the mouth without biting it. After receiving the Body and Blood of Christ, do the sign of the Cross.

The “Anima Christi” that is, the soul of Christ, is to be prayed after the reception of the Holy Communion and the prayer is to be said mentally, with the head lowered, while kneeling at the bench: Soul of Christ, sanctify me. Body of Christ, save me. Blood of Christ, inebriate me. Water from the side of Christ, wash me. Passion of Christ, strengthen me. O good Jesus, hear me. Within your wounds, hide me. Separated from you let me never be. From the malignant enemy, defend me. At the hour of death, call me. To come to you, command me. That I may praise you in the company of your saints, for all eternity. Amen.

ABLATION
C.: Lord, may I receive these gifts in purity of heart. May they bring me healing and strength, now and forever.

COMMUNION ANTIPHON
C.: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?” Matthew 6:25. And Kateri Tekakwitha repeated it, saying: “I have abandoned this miserable body to hunger and any other misery. The poverty with I am threatened does not scare me, because so little is needed to give to the necessities of this miserable life that my labour could provide for it and I could always find some rags to cover me. I have considered myself happy to live in poverty and misery for His love.”

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION
C.: Lord God, may this Eucharist renew our courage and strength. May we remain close to you, like Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha by accepting in our lives a share in the sufferings of Jesus Christ, who reigns with you forever and ever. We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord.

The Priest and the faithful say together the prayer for the canonization of Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha: O God, who, among the many marvels of your grace in the New World, did cause to blossom on the banks of the Mohawk and to the Saint Lawrence the pure and tender lily, Kateri Tekakwitha, grant, we beseech you, the favour we beg through her intercession, so that this young lover of Jesus and of His Cross may soon be counted among the saints of the Holy Mother Church and that our hearts may be enkindled with a stronger desire to imitate her innocence and faith. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

When returning home, drink water so that the Host is completely swallowed.
A reminder, whenever passing in front of the altar (and her tomb) to do the sign of the Cross while doing the signs of adoration by kneeling at the knee and the lowering of your head.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and the hour of our death. Amen

The feast of Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha does not take precedence over the commemoration of Christ’s suffering, death and Resurrection. If April 17 falls on Palm Sunday to the 8th day of the Easter Octave, which is the Sunday after Easter Sunday, her feast day is celebrated before Palm Sunday or soon after the Sunday after Easter Sunday.
