Huron Wampum Belt

“The year 1677 was a remarkable for the Mission, because of a celebrated present that was send from the Mission of Lorette. This was a Wampum belt that addressed the voice of the Hurons from the Mission of Lorette to the Mission of the Sault. This was to take good Faith, to build a chapel as soon possible and exhort them to fight the different demons, which conspire to ruin either Mission.

The belt was soon attached to the horizontal beam of the chapel above the altar and such as to always look at, and listen to that voice.”

Catherine Tekakwitha would see this Wampum belt when she would come to pray at the chapel that was a bark lodge. Then, when the first chapel was finished in the spring of 1678 that the belt was attached to the horizontal beam of the Chapel of Saint Francis Xavier.

This Huron Wampum belt was always kept at the Mission of St. Francis Xavier. Unfortunately, the belt was taken away from the Mission without their permission and never returned back. This is the property of the Saint Francis Xavier Mission in Kahnawake, and should be returned and remain there as the Wampum belt is a Native event relic of the First Nation of Kahnawake.

This is a picture in 1936 (The Montreal Star newspaper) of Wilfrid Ménard, S.J., who was the Superior Reverend Father of the Mission from 1932 to 1936, holding the Huron Wampum belt and probably was about four feet in length:

« L’année 1677 a été remarquable par un célèbre présent qui fut envoyé de la Mission de Lorette. C’était un collier exhortation qui adressant la voix des Hurons de la Mission de Lorette à la Mission du Sault. Ceci était pour leur faire prendre la foi tout de bon, pour leur faire bâtir une chapelle au plutôt, et il les exhortait aussi à combattre les différents démons qui conjura la ruine de l’une et l’autre mission. Ce collier fut aussitôt attaché à la poutre horizontale de la chapelle qui répond au-dessus de l’autel afin qu’on le regarde toujours et qu’on écoutait cette voix. »

 Catherine Tekakwitha voyait ce collier quand elle venait prier à la chapelle qui fut une cabane d’écorce. Après quand la première chapelle fut bâtie au printemps 1678 que le collier fut attaché à la poutre horizontale de la chapelle qui répond au-dessus de l’autel de la Chapelle de Saint François Xavier.

Ce collier des Hurons a été toujours garder à la Mission de Saint François Xavier. Malheureusement, le collier fut enlevé de la Mission sans leur permission et jamais retourner. Ceci est la propriété de la Mission Saint François Xavier en Kahnawake, et devrait être retourner et de rester la comme ce collier est une relique d’événement de la Première Nation de Kahnawake.
